Vallejo Hiking Club: Exploring Nature, Connecting Community (2026)

The birth of the Vallejo Hiking Club marks an exciting new chapter in the city's journey towards a greener, more connected community. This initiative, led by passionate individuals, aims to transform the way locals and visitors experience Vallejo's natural beauty.

Embracing Nature's Call

Rooted in Vallejo, a community-driven organization, has taken its mission beyond cleanups and into the great outdoors. Their vision? To activate Vallejo's outdoor spaces and showcase its hidden gems.

"I see it as an opportunity to not only clean up but to get people out in nature," Erin McGarry, co-founder of Rooted Vallejo, shares.

An Inclusive Adventure

The inaugural hike, a 3.5-mile journey along the San Pablo Bay Hiking Trail on Mare Island, is designed to be inclusive. McGarry emphasizes, "It's not just for beginners or experienced hikers. It's for everyone, regardless of age or fitness level."

This inclusive approach is a breath of fresh air, especially in a world where outdoor activities can sometimes feel exclusive.

Discovering Vallejo's Hidden Treasures

McGarry's passion for her city is evident. She wants locals to discover the beauty right on their doorstep, often overlooked in favor of more well-known hiking destinations like Napa, Sonoma, or Marin.

"Vallejo has so much to offer, and I want people to experience that for themselves," she adds.

A Native's Perspective

Camille Salazar, a Vallejo native, shares her love for the outdoors and her desire to bring this experience to her community. Having lived in Humboldt, where nature was more accessible, Salazar understands the importance of connecting with nature and each other in a world dominated by screens.

"We want to bring people together, away from their devices, and into the real world," she explains.

Themed Hikes: A Creative Twist

The Vallejo Hiking Club plans to offer themed hikes, adding an element of creativity and exploration. From wildlife walks to photography hikes, the club aims to engage participants in unique ways.

Salazar also highlights the importance of including all age groups, with family hikes and hikes tailored for the elderly on the agenda.

Art in Public Spaces

Inspired by the art installations along the Napa Valley Vine Trail, Salazar envisions similar projects in Vallejo. She believes that integrating art into public spaces can enhance the hiking experience and further connect the community.

"Vallejo has so much more to offer than meets the eye. I want people to discover that for themselves," Salazar adds.

A Brighter, Greener Future

The Vallejo Hiking Club's inaugural hike is just the beginning. With a focus on inclusivity, creativity, and community, the club aims to inspire a deeper connection with nature and each other.

As the club grows, so too will Vallejo's reputation as a destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers.

"I believe this is a step towards a brighter, greener future for Vallejo," McGarry concludes.
