In a deeply moving tale, a terminally ill fan has found solace in playing Doom during his final days, drawing a heartfelt response from the game's developers who want him to feel supported and appreciated.
On January 31, Reddit user Wanderingrader123 shared a poignant post detailing his experience as he battles Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a fight he has been engaged in since 2022. Unfortunately, his health has taken a turn for the worse, with doctors estimating that he may only have weeks left to live. Graciously, the Toronto hospital where he is receiving care offered to honor any last requests he had, leading him to ask if he could play the upcoming Doom: The Dark Ages. He expressed how much the series means to him since he became a fan in 2016, noting how the reboot and its sequel, Doom Eternal, have helped him through incredibly tough times. However, due to financial constraints, he had not been able to experience Dark Ages until now. Thankfully, the hospital provided him with a PS5 and a copy of the game, allowing him to immerse himself in the action once more.
"I may not live to see the upcoming DLC, but I am nonetheless happy to finally play the game in my own hands," Wanderingrader123 wrote, expressing gratitude towards the developers at ID Software. "Thank you for bringing such a beautiful piece of art that not only revitalized the FPS genre but also reinvented it in ways no other game has. Your work has created an amazing series for fans like me."
His touching story caught the eye of Hugo Martin, the game director at id Software, known for leading the recent Doom titles including the anticipated Dark Ages. Martin responded directly on Reddit, saying, "Thank you so much for your support and know that all of id salutes you, brother. I tell the team all the time, people care about our games; we have to put the same amount of care into making them. It has been the honor of our professional lives making these past three games for fans like you. To make the Slayer feel STRONG in DOOM, we infuse him with all the attributes of a true old-school hero: strength, courage and heart… we make him like you. RIP AND TEAR, my friend. You are the real Slayer."
Wanderingrader123’s bittersweet announcement also drew a response from John Romero, one of the original developers behind Doom and co-founder of id Software in the 1990s. Romero expressed his admiration by stating, "I am so moved and honored that you carried DOOM with you for a decade and chose to live in DOOM as your journey nears its end. You embody bravery and courage, and you are the reason DOOM exists. When we made DOOM, we intended to create a world where you felt powerful, even when facing overwhelming odds. Knowing it has been a companion to you, something familiar and steady, means more to me than I can express. You are not alone in that hospital room; you stand in a place millions of us have stood, fighting. Every enemy, every level, every moment matters because you do. Thank you for sharing this part of your life with us. Thank you for bringing DOOM with you. Rip and tear—with love and respect."
The broader Doom community also rallied around Wanderingrader123, sharing messages of support and commending his bravery. The emotional outpouring prompted him to respond, stating, "I want to thank you all for the kind support you have given over the past 24 hours. I was initially hesitant to share my situation due to its nature. No amount of words can capture the overwhelming kindness I’ve received since posting. The support from both fans and developers has been incredible. I have received numerous direct messages, which I appreciate immensely, though I may not be able to respond to them all. It's a true privilege to be part of such a welcoming community like r/Doom and to share this experience. I’m currently enjoying defeating demons with the flail.
For those curious, I am in the Toronto General Hospital in Downtown Toronto, Ontario. However, for both my privacy and my family’s, I won’t disclose my location further. I kindly ask for your understanding regarding my privacy, as well as for the tremendous support. I plan to use my remaining time to enjoy life and spend moments with my family and friends. Thank you again, everyone!"
