A shocking verdict has left many questioning the justice system: a teenager has walked free after a fatal crash on Adelaide Avenue. But here's where it gets controversial... The stolen white Toyota Camry, driven recklessly, lost control and rolled, ejecting and killing a rear passenger. Yet, on March 3, an ACT Supreme Court jury acquitted him, leaving doubts about who was truly behind the wheel that fateful morning.
And this is the part most people miss... The teenager admitted to being in the stolen car but denied driving it. He insisted another person was in control when the vehicle crashed into a concrete wall. Interestingly, no witness testimony directly placed the teen in the driver’s seat, despite two other men pleading guilty to their roles in the incident. These individuals, who had previously signed statements naming the boy as the driver, later claimed memory lapses due to intoxication. One stated, 'I was high on drugs and alcohol... I don’t remember anything,' while the other admitted, 'There were parts of the statement I didn’t agree with.'
The prosecution’s case hinged on the teen’s blood found on the driver’s side airbag and door, but he countered by explaining he had exited through the driver’s window to escape the wreckage. The jury also cleared him of culpable driving causing death. Acting Justice John Burns sentenced him to a three-month good behaviour order, including a curfew, for the lesser charge of riding in a stolen vehicle.
