Tanzania's bold move to unlock its mineral potential! 🌟
In a recent announcement, the Tanzanian government revealed its plan to establish an Export Guarantee Scheme (EGS), a strategic initiative aimed at empowering local miners and boosting the nation's economy. But here's where it gets controversial: the scheme is designed to keep profits from the country's mineral wealth within its borders.
Minister for Minerals, Anthony Mavunde, unveiled this plan during a working session in Dodoma. He highlighted the challenges faced by Tanzanian miners in securing large loans from local banks due to the inherent risks associated with their primary revenue source - exports.
"It's time to maximize our mineral wealth and ensure it benefits Tanzanians directly," Mavunde emphasized.
The ministry is now implementing President Samia Suluhu Hassan's directives, which focus on strengthening the management of Tanzania's mineral resources. The goal? To increase the sector's contribution to the national economy, support development projects, and ensure citizens reap the rewards.
"The president has set the bar high, expecting this sector to deliver tangible value," Mavunde added.
To achieve this, the minister directed the Permanent Secretary, Engineer Yahya Samamba, to collaborate with experts and coal producers to address existing challenges and develop strategies to meet local and regional demand for coal.
"This is a win-win opportunity for our producers and the government," Mavunde noted, referring to the demand for coal from neighboring countries.
Minister Mavunde also emphasized the need for innovative ideas to boost government revenue, enhance mining supervision, and create economic opportunities, especially for youth and women.
Deputy Minister for Minerals, Dr. Steve Kiruswa, urged ministry staff to uphold professionalism, integrity, and discipline in their duties.
"Proper execution is crucial for increasing revenue and safeguarding our national resources," he stated.
Eng. Samamba underscored the importance of value addition within the mining sector, emphasizing its potential to create jobs, stimulate the local economy, and boost national income.
Earlier, Commissioner for Minerals, Dr. Abdul Rahman Mwanga, outlined 14 priority areas identified by President Samia for the development of the mining sector. These priorities will guide the ministry in expanding production, improving governance, adding value, and ensuring communities benefit from Tanzania's mineral wealth.
