Sonoma County Explores Soccer Stadium at Fairgrounds with United Soccer League (2026)

Get ready for an exciting development in Sonoma County! The future of sports and entertainment is about to be shaped right here.

The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors has taken a bold step by entering into negotiations with the United Soccer League (USL). The focus? Evaluating the Sonoma County Fairgrounds as a potential site for a brand-new multi-purpose stadium and an entire mixed-use entertainment district. But here's where it gets controversial...

While the Letter of Intent doesn't commit the County to funding or constructing the stadium, it does provide USL with a clear path to explore and study the Fairgrounds. This exclusive negotiating period, lasting until September 17, 2026, will see USL test designs and assess the financial viability of the project.

Supervisor Lynda Hopkins, the chair of the Board of Supervisors, expressed enthusiasm: "Professional soccer could bring a vibrant new energy to the Fairgrounds, and we're dedicated to involving the community in this exploration."

To ensure transparency and public involvement, the Board has established an ad hoc committee, led by Supervisors Rebecca Hermosillo and Chris Coursey. This committee will guide the evaluation process and explore the possibility of a public-private partnership with USL for the stadium development.

Additionally, the Board has allocated funds for public engagement and legal review. Early 2026 will see a series of public meetings, providing a platform for neighbors, businesses, labor groups, soccer enthusiasts, and other stakeholders to share their visions for this potential sports and entertainment complex.

Hugo Mata, president of the Sonoma County Fair & Exposition Board of Directors, emphasized the importance of community involvement: "The Fairgrounds are a cherished public asset, and we're committed to ensuring that any potential project aligns with our year-round operations and supports our agricultural heritage, public events, emergency preparedness, and overall community resilience."

This initiative builds upon a joint meeting held on October 17, where the Board of Supervisors and the Sonoma County Fair Board directed staff to advance discussions with USL.

USL has identified Santa Rosa as a prime expansion market for professional men's and women's soccer, and the Sonoma County Fairgrounds has emerged as the top choice after a preliminary site review earlier this year. USL plans to develop a funding model for a stadium capable of hosting at least 5,000 spectators. To minimize public subsidies, USL envisions a mixed-use entertainment district with housing, retail, and other amenities. They aim to complete feasibility studies by late summer 2026.

And this is the part most people miss... While this proposal offers an exciting opportunity for Sonoma County, it also raises questions about the balance between public and private interests, the impact on the local community, and the long-term sustainability of such a development. What are your thoughts on this potential stadium and entertainment district? Do you think it will bring positive change to the area, or are there potential drawbacks that need to be considered? We'd love to hear your opinions in the comments below!
