"If there were a Rugby World Cup tomorrow, I would still confidently support our boys to claim victory": This bold declaration comes from none other than Sonny Bill Williams, who holds a firm belief that the All Blacks remain well-positioned to reclaim the prestigious Webb Ellis Cup from South Africa. This optimism persists even after the departure of Scott Robertson, just 20 months prior to the next Rugby World Cup set to take place in Australia.
Williams, a former centre with an impressive record of 58 caps and a proud member of the victorious All Blacks squads of 2011 and 2015, recently shared his thoughts on Instagram regarding the necessary steps for New Zealand rugby to regain its competitive edge. He expressed his views on potential candidates to succeed Scott Robertson—who, despite having nearly two years left on his NZRU head coaching contract, lost the support of the team and ultimately his position.
In his Instagram post, Williams remarked, "My two cents? It's exactly the same as I said when I retired from the game: we need to infuse more diversity into our coaching staff, NZRU board members. I understand this might not sit well with everyone, but it’s my honest perspective."
He elaborated on his reasoning, emphasizing the importance of connection in achieving correction. "At this level, these players are skilled; they know how to play rugby, kick the ball, tackle, and pass. However, what inspired me—and many players I know—was the belief in the system and trust in the coaches. That motivation pushed us to give our all on the field, almost to the point of running through walls for our team. This is what we need again."
Additionally, he acknowledged that other teams have improved significantly, which is simply the nature of competition. "However, if there were a Rugby World Cup tomorrow, I would still back our boys to win; we just need to get this part right."
Looking ahead, Williams sees a multitude of options for the coaching role, citing names like Jamie Joseph and Dave Rennie, as well as Tony Brown currently overseas, suggesting that perhaps they should bring him back. He also mentioned Tana Umaga among potential candidates.
Williams candidly admitted, "Like you all, I don’t have all the answers, but these are my genuine thoughts. We require a coaching team that understands how to connect with the players before they can correct them because our players already possess the skills needed, and we have a strong squad."
Moreover, Williams believes that the All Blacks’ standout player, Ardie Savea, should take over the captaincy from Scott Barrett. "I hold Scott Barrett in high regard; he’s one of the best in the world. However, I truly think it’s time to hand the captaincy to Ardie. He’s the player we need moving forward, given the invaluable contributions he has made. Just look at his performance against Moane this year."
