The footage, captured by a remotely operated vehicle at an impressive depth of 700 meters, revealed more than just a meal. Scientifically known as Haliphron atlanticus, this octopus species has a unique characteristic: despite having eight arms, males often keep their specialized eighth arm hidden, giving the illusion of having only seven.
Female seven-arm octopuses are particularly impressive, reaching lengths of up to 13 feet and weighing a hefty 165 pounds. They primarily inhabit the ocean's twilight zone, a region where light is scarce, typically located between 650 and 3,000 feet below the surface.
Haddock expressed his excitement, saying, "Seeing this species again was a thrill. It's fascinating that such a large octopus can reach these impressive sizes on a diet primarily consisting of gelatinous creatures."
