A Terrifying Encounter: When a Python Pays a Visit
Imagine waking up in the dead of night, only to discover a massive, slithering intruder on your chest. This is exactly what happened to Rachel Bloor, an Australian woman, who experienced a heart-stopping moment that left her and her partner in a state of shock.
As Bloor stirred in her sleep, she reached out, expecting to feel the warmth of her dog. Instead, her hand encountered a smooth, unexpected creature. Half-asleep and disoriented, she initially thought nothing of it, until her partner switched on the lamp and uttered those chilling words: "Baby, don't move. There's a python on you."
"I couldn't believe my ears," Bloor recalled. "My first reaction was to swear, and my second was to get the dogs out of the room. I knew my Dalmatian would go crazy if he saw that snake."
With the dogs safely secured outside, Bloor began the delicate process of extracting herself from the python's embrace. "I was trying to move slowly, inching myself out from under the covers. It felt so surreal. I kept asking myself, 'Is this really happening?'"
Bloor believes the non-venomous carpet python, known for its constrictor abilities, had found its way into her bedroom through the window shutters. Once free from the python, she calmly guided it back out, a testament to her composure.
"It was so big that even after it uncoiled from me, its tail was still sticking out of the shutter. I grabbed it, and it didn't seem too bothered. It just kind of wobbled in my hand."
While Bloor remained remarkably calm, her husband was not so fortunate. Having grown up around snakes, she believes her composure kept the python relaxed. "I think if you stay calm, they sense it and remain calm too."
But here's where it gets controversial: Bloor admitted that if it had been a cane toad, a notorious pest in Australia, the outcome might have been different. "Cane toads make me physically ill. If it had been one of those, I'd have been terrified."
Despite the close call, all involved emerged unscathed. Carpet pythons, common in coastal Australia, typically feed on small mammals and birds. This encounter serves as a reminder of the unique wildlife encounters that can occur in the land down under.
And this is the part most people miss: it's not just about the snake. It's about the calmness and presence of mind that can make all the difference in such situations. So, what do you think? Are you brave enough to handle a similar encounter? Or would you be screaming for help? Let's discuss in the comments!
