The TUS Dr. Harty Cup: A Thrilling Race to the Quarter-Finals!
This year's competition is heating up, and the stakes couldn't be higher. With a reduced number of teams, every match counts! The format change from 21 schools in the 2024-25 edition to just 16 has cranked up the pressure, eliminating the need for preliminary rounds and making every group game a battle. This means more excitement, more drama, and some heartbreaking eliminations for teams that were once considered frontrunners.
Already, the holders, Thurles CBS, and Waterford’s De La Salle have secured their spots in the quarter-finals. However, with only 6 places left, 10 schools are still fighting tooth and nail for their chance at glory.
Group 1: A Three-Way Clash
In Group 1, the dreams of the 2023 winners, Cashel CS, were dashed early on. Now, the 2024 finalists, Nenagh CBS, and Ardscoil Rís, along with last year’s beaten finalists, St Flannan’s College, are locked in a fierce battle for the remaining two spots.
- Nenagh and Flannan’s each have 3 points.
- If Nenagh wins against Cashel at UL, they're through.
- The Flannan’s-Ardscoil game in Clarecastle is essentially a knockout match, though Ennis school has the advantage in case of a draw.
Group 2: The Battle for Top Spot
De La Salle is already through from Group 2, but the battle for the top spot is still raging. If De La Salle loses to Midleton CBS at Fethard Town Park, Midleton will take the lead. However, if De La Salle wins, Midleton will be nervously watching St Colman’s College's game against the already-eliminated CBS High School Clonmel in Bansha.
- Colman’s is 2 points behind Midleton.
- A draw in the opening-round Cork derby means that scoring-difference would separate them in the event of a tie.
Group 3: Dead Rubber and a Quarter-Final Qualifier
Thurles’s game against Doon’s Scoil na Tríonóide Naofa at UL is a dead rubber. The holders will finish top, and Doon will be at the bottom, no matter the outcome. The real fireworks will be between Blackwater CS and John The Baptist CS of Hospital in Castlelyons. Both schools are tied with 2 points each, making this a true quarter-final qualifier. Hospital has the scoring-difference advantage in case of a draw.
Group 4: Knockout Drama
Gaelcholáiste Mhuire An Mhainistir Thuaidh faced Christian Brothers College a fortnight ago, with neither side having won. Gaelcholáiste’s victory ended their rivals’ hopes of advancing, but it didn't fully guarantee their own progress.
- Their game against Our Lady’s Secondary School of Templemore at Fethard Town Park is a knockout tie.
- Gaelcholáiste Mhuire is a point ahead.
- Defeat might not eliminate them, but it would require CBC to beat St Joseph’s Secondary School of Tulla, who will be aiming for the top spot.
