To secure a fair agreement with BCBSMN that ensures patients with BCBSMN coverage can continue receiving the care they're used to from their trusted providers. They're aiming for a deal that works for 2026 and future years.
Now, here's the potential snag: If a deal isn't reached by the end of this year, things could get complicated. BCBSMN has stated that they will help their members transition to other in-network providers. They'll also ensure that those who qualify for continuity of care can continue seeing their current Aspirus care teams.

But here's where it gets controversial... Aspirus St. Luke's is citing rising costs, workforce challenges, and cuts in Medicaid funding as major hurdles. They claim that BCBSMN reimburses them at lower rates than other Duluth providers, even though Aspirus's overall care costs are lower. Aspirus is advocating for what they see as fairness for their patients and communities.
Blue Cross, on the other hand, expresses disappointment. They say Aspirus St. Luke's ended its contract in an effort to secure higher payment rates. Blue Cross believes that Aspirus is demanding increases that are above market standards, while their total cost of care is already higher than the state average.
So, what happens if they can't agree? If no agreement is reached, Aspirus St. Luke's, Aspirus Lake View Hospital, Northern Lakes Surgery Center, affiliated clinics in Minnesota, and Aspirus sites in Ashland and Superior, Wisconsin, will be considered out-of-network for Blue Cross members after December 31, 2025.
However, there's no immediate cause for alarm. Both organizations have confirmed that there will be no change to in-network access to Aspirus St. Luke's through December 31, 2025.
